Well-designed, well-conducted research forms the basis for effective action in health and safety. For more than three decades, PIRE scientists have carried out hundreds of research projects that have contributed to the development of more effective prevention, treatment and safety strategies. Across its six major locations, PIRE researchers utilize a wide range of research modalities, including community trials, survey research, geospatial research, cost-benefit analysis, legal and legislative analysis, computer simulation modeling, and meta-analysis.

For example, for more than 30 years, PIRE’s Center in Oakland, California, has served as the national Prevention Research Center for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. In Calverton, Maryland (Washington, D.C., area), PIRE scientists study issues surrounding traffic safety, injury, violence and health economics. Our PIRE Louisville Center conducts substantial international research. Scientists at the PIRE Decision Sciences Institute (Providence, RI) focus on issues of substance abuse treatment service delivery, as well as clinical research related to addictions and mental health.
